Professor Amitava Banerjee is a Professor at University College London, also serving as a Consultant Cardiologist at Medipark Hospital and at OneWelbeck Heart Health and as an Honorary Consultant Cardiologist at both University College London Hospitals and Barts Health NHS Trusts. His expertise includes research, education, and clinical practice, particularly focusing on data science, cardiovascular disease, global health, evidence-based healthcare, and, more recently, examining risks associated with underlying chronic diseases and long COVID during the COVID-19 pandemic. He is National Specialty Lead for Cardiovascular at the NIHR Research Development Network.

Having graduated from Oxford Medical School, Professor Banerjee underwent training as a junior doctor in Oxford, Newcastle, Hull, and London. His passion for preventive cardiology and evidence-based medicine led him to pursue a Master’s in Public Health at Harvard in 2005, followed by an internship at the World Health Organisation. He further advanced his qualifications by obtaining a DPhil in epidemiology from Oxford in 2010. Prior to joining UCL in 2015, he served as a clinical lecturer in cardiovascular medicine at the University of Birmingham.

Professor Banerjee practices in two high-volume tertiary care hospitals, managing both inpatient and outpatient cases. While his subspecialty lies in heart failure, he maintains an active practice in acute general cardiology and demonstrates a keen interest in the diagnosis and treatment of atrial fibrillation.

His clinical experiences significantly influence his research endeavours, leading to insights in various areas such as assessing medical technology, studying cardiovascular disease within underserved populations, exploring disease patterns in electronic health records, and focusing on the impact of COVID-19.
