Abdominal (Tummy) Pain
Overview
Abdominal pain is discomfort or a dull ache in the area between the chest and the pelvis. It can be caused by a wide range of conditions, including:
- Gastrointestinal issues, such as indigestion, constipation, or inflammatory bowel disease
- Reproductive issues, such as menstrual cramps or endometriosis
- Urinary issues, such as a urinary tract infection or kidney stones
- Other causes, such as a viral or bacterial infection, a hernia, or a liver or gallbladder problem.
Symptoms of abdominal pain can include:
- Cramping or a sharp pain
- Bloating
- Gas
- Nausea
- Vomiting
- Diarrhoea
- Constipation
Diagnosis of abdominal pain usually involves a physical examination, a review of your medical history, and possibly some tests, such as blood or urine tests, or imaging tests, such as an X-ray, CT scan, or ultrasound.
Treatment for abdominal pain will depend on the underlying cause. Some common treatments include:
- Over-the-counter pain relievers, such as ibuprofen or acetaminophen
- Changes in diet, such as eating smaller, more frequent meals or avoiding certain foods
- Medications to treat specific conditions, such as antibiotics for a urinary tract infection
- Surgery to correct certain conditions, such as a hernia.
It is important to consult your doctor if you experience abdominal pain that is severe, persistent, or accompanied by other symptoms such as fever, vomiting, or blood in your stool.
