Pelvic Pain
Overview
Pelvic pain is pain or discomfort in the area located in the lower abdomen and between the hips. It can have many different causes, some of the most common are:
- Reproductive issues, such as endometriosis, pelvic inflammatory disease, or ovarian cysts
- Gastrointestinal issues, such as irritable bowel syndrome or diverticulitis
- Urinary issues, such as a bladder or kidney infection
- Musculoskeletal issues, such as pelvic floor muscle spasms or nerve pain
- Other causes, such as a hernia, pelvic tumours or traumatic injuries
Symptoms of pelvic pain can include:
- Sharp or dull pain
- Cramping
- Bloating
- Gas
- Nausea
- Constipation
- Diarrhea
- Urinary frequency or urgency
- Fatigue
Diagnosis of pelvic pain usually involves a physical examination, a review of your medical history, and possibly some tests, such as blood or urine tests, or imaging tests, such as an ultrasound, CT scan or MRI.
Treatment for pelvic pain will depend on the underlying cause. Some common treatments include:
- Over-the-counter pain relievers such as ibuprofen or acetaminophen
- Hormonal therapy or birth control pills to regulate menstrual cycle
- Medications to treat specific conditions, such as antibiotics for a urinary tract infection
- Surgery to correct certain conditions, such as removing ovarian cysts or endometriosis
- Physical therapy or pelvic floor muscle exercises to help with muscle spasms or nerve pain
It is important to consult your doctor if you experience pelvic pain that is severe, persistent, or accompanied by other symptoms such as fever, heavy bleeding, or blood in your stool.
