Benign Prostate Hyperplasia (BPH) Or Enlargement (BPE)

Overview

This is a condition to describe an abnormal enlargement of prostate gland that might affect peeing in individuals.

BPH is completely benign and has nothing to do with prostate cancer. It does not progress into or increase the risk to prostate cancer.

It is common in men over 50 years old and so the cause is believed to increased age resulting in changes in male hormones.

Symptoms are related to possible blockage to peeing like difficulty in peeing, frequently going for peeing, waking up during the sleep to pee and accidently leaking pee.

Diagnosis involves physical examination and sometimes further investigations including biopsy and scans like MRI, ultrasound, CT and Xray are needed to confirm the diagnosis.

Treatment involves watchful waiting, sometimes medication and/or surgery depending on the severity of the symptoms.

To discuss examination and treatment options, please book an appointment with our specialist.
