Fibroids
Overview
The most common benign tumour in women of childbearing age is uterine fibroids. In women, fibroids are growths of muscle cells and other tissues inside or around the uterus. It is unknown what causes fibroids. Overweight and African American ethnicity are risk factors.
In many cases, fibroids do not cause any symptoms in women.
Symptoms may include:
- Periods that are painful or heavy or bleeding between periods
- Having a feeling of fullness in the lower abdomen
- Frequently urinating
- Pain during sex
- Pain in the lower back
- Issues related to fertility, miscarriages, or early labour
Fibroids can be detected during a gynaecological examination or using imaging tests. Surgery or drugs can stop or slow their growth. It may not even be necessary to seek treatment if you do not have any symptoms. Most women with fibroids are able to conceive naturally. Infertility treatments may be able to help those who cannot.
