Guillain-Barre Syndrome

Overview

It is a rare disorder in which your immune system attacks your peripheral nervous system (PNS). Nerves in the PNS connect the brain and spinal cord to other parts of your body. When these nerves are damaged, they are unable to transmit signals. This causes your muscles to have trouble responding to your brain.

Cause

The cause of the syndrome is unknown. Infections, surgeries, and vaccinations can sometimes cause it.

Symptoms

First, you may feel weak or tingly in your legs. Your upper body may also feel the effects. When it is severe, you almost become paralyzed. This is a life-threatening situation. It is possible that you will need a respirator to breathe. In most cases, symptoms worsen over a few weeks and then stabilize.

Diagnosis

It can be difficult to diagnose Guillain-Barre syndrome. There are several types of tests that may be performed, including nerve tests and spinal taps. In most cases, people recover. Depending on the severity of the condition, recovery can last from a few weeks to a few years.

Treatment

There are many ways to treat symptoms, including using medicines or performing a procedure known as plasma exchange.
