Hypermobility

Overview

Hypermobility refers to a condition where a person’s joints have an unusually large range of motion. This can make the joints more susceptible to injury and pain.

Causes of hypermobility can include genetics, as some people are born with hypermobile joints. It can also occur due to certain medical conditions such as Ehlers-Danlos syndrome or Marfan syndrome.

Symptoms of hypermobility can include joint pain, joint instability, and frequent dislocations or sprains. Some people may also experience muscle or joint fatigue, or chronic pain.

Diagnosis of hypermobility typically involves a physical examination and may include a Beighton score, a test that measures the range of motion in different joints.

Treatment for hypermobility can include physical therapy to help improve muscle strength and stability around the joints, as well as pain management techniques such as ice, heat therapy, and medications. In some cases, bracing or surgery may be recommended.

It’s important to note that people with hypermobility should avoid high-impact activities and be careful when performing activities that put a lot of stress on the joints.
