Bursitis
Overview
Bursitis is a condition characterized by inflammation of the fluid-filled sacs, called bursae, that cushion the joints. Bursitis can occur in many joints throughout the body, but it is most common in the shoulder, elbow, hip, and knee.
There are different types of bursitis, such as:
- Trochanteric bursitis: which affects the hip.
- Subacromial bursitis: which affects the shoulder.
- Olecranon bursitis: which affects the elbow.
- Prepatellar bursitis: which affects the knee.
Causes of bursitis can include overuse or injury to the joint, as well as certain medical conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis or gout.
Symptoms of bursitis include pain, tenderness, and stiffness in the affected joint, as well as swelling and warmth around the joint.
Diagnosis of bursitis typically involves a physical examination and may include imaging tests such as x-ray or ultrasound.
Treatment for bursitis typically includes rest, ice, and physical therapy to help reduce inflammation and improve range of motion. Medications such as nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) may also be prescribed to manage pain. In some cases, a corticosteroid injection may be given to reduce inflammation. In severe cases, surgery may be necessary to remove the inflamed bursa.
It’s important to note that bursitis can be a symptom of a more serious underlying condition, so it’s important to seek medical attention if you suspect you have bursitis.
