Pelvic Inflammatory Disease

Overview

Pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) results from infection and inflammation of the uterus, ovaries, and other female reproductive organs in the lower part of the body. This results in scarring of these organs. A number of serious problems can develop, including infertility, ectopic pregnancy, pelvic pain, and abscesses. It is the most common preventable cause of infertility.

PID is most often caused by gonorrhea and chlamydia, both sexually transmitted diseases. It can also be caused by other bacteria.

You are more likely to be at risk if you:

  • Younger than 25 and sexually active
  • Having more than one sexual partner
  • Douche

It is possible for some women to have no symptoms. The symptoms may include pain in the lower abdomen, fever, smelly vaginal discharge, irregular bleeding, and pain during intercession or urination.

Diagnosing PID requires a physical examination, laboratory tests, and imaging tests.

Can be cured with antibiotics. It is very beneficial to seek treatment early. A long delay in treatment increases the chances of infertility.
