Urinary Track Infections (UTIs)

Overview

Body waste and extra water are removed from the body through the urinary system. The kidney, ureter, bladder, and urethra are all part of the urinary system. A urinary tract infection (UTI) is the second most common infection.

The following symptoms may indicate a UTI:

  • The sensation of burning or pain while urinating
  • Feeling tired, shaky, or feverish
  • Frequent urges to urinate
  • Lower belly pressure
  • Bad-smelling, cloudy, or reddish urine
  • Back or side pain below the ribs

UTIs can affect people of any age or gender. Women, however, get UTIs four times more often than men. People with diabetes, bladder tubes, or spinal cord injuries are also more at risk.

The first step to treating a UTI is to see a doctor. A urine test can determine whether you have a UTI. Antibiotics are used in treatment.
