Infertility
Overview
Infertility is the inability to conceive a child after a certain period of time, typically one year of regular, unprotected intercourse. There are two main types of infertility: primary infertility and secondary infertility.
Primary infertility refers to couples who have never been able to conceive a child. Secondary infertility refers to couples who have been able to conceive a child in the past but are now unable to do so.
Infertility can be caused by a variety of factors, including:
- Ovulation disorders
- Fallopian tube damage or blockage
- Uterine problems
Symptoms of infertility include irregular or missing periods, pain during intercourse or ovulation, and abnormal vaginal bleeding. However, many people with infertility have no symptoms.
Diagnosis of infertility typically involves a physical examination and may include tests such as blood tests to check hormone levels, hysterosalpingography (HSG) or laparoscopy to check the fallopian tubes, and semen analysis in men.
Treatment for infertility depends on the underlying cause and can range from medication such as clomiphene citrate to stimulate ovulation, to assisted reproductive technologies (ART) such as in vitro fertilization (IVF) and intrauterine insemination (IUI). Surgery may be needed in some cases to correct structural problems.
It’s important to note that infertility can be a complex and emotionally challenging condition, and it’s important to seek support and counseling if you are struggling with infertility.
