Everybody has had a headache at some point. A headache is the most common type of pain. This is a major cause for missed work days, missed school days, or doctor’s visits.


Tension headaches are the most common type of headache. Muscle tension in the shoulders, neck, scalp, and jaw causes tension headaches. A variety of factors can contribute to them, including stress, depression, and anxiety. Tension headaches are more likely to occur if you work too much, don’t get enough sleep, miss meals, or drink too much.


Migraines, cluster headaches, and sinus headaches are also common types of headaches. Lifestyle changes, relaxation techniques, and pain relievers can help most people feel much better.

Not all headaches require medical attention. Sometimes, however, headaches signal a more serious condition. If you suffer from sudden, severe headaches, consult with a doctor. If you have a headache after a blow to the head, a stiff neck, fever, confusion, loss of consciousness, or pain in your eye or ear, seek medical attention right away.
