Pituitary Tumours

Overview

Pituitary glands are pea-sized glands located at the base of the brain. Pituitary glands produce hormones that influence the growth and functions of other glands in the body.

Pituitary tumours are common, but they rarely lead to health problems. Many people do not even know they have pituitary tumours. In the most common type of pituitary tumour, hormones are produced and disrupt the body’s hormonal balance. There are various endocrine diseases that can be caused by this, including Cushing’s syndrome and hyperthyroidism.

There are several symptoms associated with pituitary tumours, including:

  • Having headaches
  • Problems with vision
  • Feeling nauseated or vomiting
  • Hormone overproduction problems

It is usually possible to cure pituitary tumours. Tumours are often removed surgically. Chemotherapy, radiation therapy, and medicines are other options.
